This is one of those records that makes you happy as you listen; it swings hard from the first note to the last. Buckner's famous "locked-hands" style is in powerful form here at the organ and his accompanists, bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Sam Woodyard, provide the rhythmic propulsion they were famous for in Duke Ellington's band. Woodyard even manages to make brushes kick with the organ, no small feat. The saxophones are played by Danny Turner, an underrated but expressive Sonny Stitt influenced improviser.
Kenny Wheeler & John Taylor "Where Do We Go From Here?"
Everything is perfect on this CD; the playing, the recording, the choice of material. These two gentleman have a long musical association and their mutual wisdom, courage, and humility is all available to the listener to enjoy and treasure. What's really obvious is how individual and innovative their approaches are to playing jazz, and how their styles reflect many traditional elements without ever interfering with their own unique approaches. Each musician has transcended his instrument through a pronounced and deeply intuitive sense of time and harmony.
